I created a simple chart. When I tried to access it today all I got was the chart without the buy and sell indicator. In fact the sample strategy did not have indicator for buy and sell. Just the candlestick chart.

For your first question I'm not sure what you mean you created a simple chart. In WL8 you create a Strategy. You can open a Chart window, but do you mean you created a Strategy?

To run a strategy without all the visualizers and for Streaming, drag and drop the strategy into a chart window. Save the Workspace if you want to come back to it.

Using building blocks I selected "buy at market" and close crosses over SMA (close, 8) and "sell at market" close under SMA (close, 8). I am assuming close, 8 means 8 periods or 8 days using a daily chart.

When I then clicked on "chart" and entered a symbol (aapl in this case) the chart appeared buy no SMA line and no buy/sell symbols.

When I created this strategy I also added additional indicators (for example RSI) but those indicators did not appear as well.

Of course the Chart will be completely empty. You should click "Run backtest" first, then go to the Chart view.

You first have to run the strategy using the green Run Backtest button.

Afterward, you will see the strategy indicators and trades on the chart. if you backtested a DataSet, and not a single symbol, only those symbols in the DataSet will display these. If you backtested using a single symbol, then each time you enter a new symbol in the chart or click a symbol in the tree wl8 will run the backtest for that symbol.

Glitch, this reminds me of the old joke about an old school lumberjack who is given a chainsaw. The person who gave the lumberjack the chainsaw comes back the next day and asks how the lumberjack how he likes the new saw.

The lumberjack says it didn't seen to work that well. The person who gave him the chainsaw says give it to me and let try it. When the person started up the chainsaw the lumberjack asked "what's that sound".

I used the backtest button and it worked for the data set that came with WL8. But of course I have a couple of questions:
1. How do I run a backtest for an individual stock?
2. How do I run a backtest for a new data set I created? How do I the data set I previously used?
3. How do I save and show indicators that I add to the strategy chart?

I am sorry for all the questions but I have been using WealthLab for many years, back in the Fidelity days, and the navigation of WL8 is very different. Thank you in advance for your help.

1. You can choose Single Symbol or Portfolio Backtest from Strategy Settings. Alternatively, select the symbol in the DataSets tree.
3. Using "Indicator Sets", this is a new concept not seen in WL6.

Eugene, I got the single symbol and portfolio backtest working, thanks.

I think I understand the concept of "indicator sets" and found reference to them in the "chart" help. I can't find the drop down at the right end of the toolbar. There is a blank drop down at the top of the chart. Do I put the indicators I want to save in that box?

Let's not go off-topic but to close this question, see the video showing how to use indicator sets:

Eugene, thank you. This helps a lot. Now I need to use WL8 to get more comfortable with it but this puts me on the right track. It also gives me some insight to the power of WL 8.

Happy New Year.
