GICS Structure not updated

The GICS had several changes last year including changing the sector Telecommunications Services to Communication Services.

I went to Data Manager and updated the GICS codes using the Fidelity update. I did not get the new structure. I then deleted the file containing the Fidelity GICS codes and created a new file of codes in WLP. The code structure was the same as the old.

I called Fidelity to have them correct the download file and they told me to post it here to get it corrected.

I am frequently confused about the division of responsibilities and I am concerned about this one since this appears to be a Fidelity data issue. Will my posting this here get it fixed or do I need to go back to Fidelity?

Thanks.

I've noticed the same thing. The WealthLab.DataProviders.dll in the WL install directory needs to be updated to include the sector name change from Telecommunications Services to Communication Services and a top level sector of Real Estate (60XXXXXX) needs to be added. The new industries for Equity Real Estate Investments Trusts (REITS) [601010XX] and Real Estate Management Development [404030XX -> 601020XX] then need to be included.

The new industry for Entertainment [451010XX ? -> 502020XX] and some industry renaming/reassigning [Media 402040XX -> Media 502010XX] and Interactive Media & Services [451010XX ? -> 502030XX] needs to get in there.

A Wealth-Lab update is scheduled for this summer, so I'm "guessing" they will update the WealthLab.DataProviders.dll assembly then.

The GICS coding for the actual stocks is probably done on the server side, but updating that without updating the above DLL isn't going to work. They both need to be updated together.

On a separate note, any new listings created around 3 years back (or so) don't seem to have a defined GICS code assigned to them. I'm not sure what's happening there.

@traderray, you've come to the right place. Unfortunately, the GICS issue is unlikely to make it into the upcoming update that superticker is talking about. But it's on the todo list and will be addressed sooner rather than later.

I can't test it right now due to issues in the QA environment, but just to check off the most obvious cause; you hit the button to "Update Industry Data", right?

Thanks Eugene and superticker for the quick replies.

If the next update is scheduled for this summer and GICS corrections will probably not make it into that version, is it safe to assume that we probably will not see it until at least 2020?

Well, I tried that a year ago; didn't help. Let's approach this differently. Can you get any of the GICS codes for the ticker symbols below to work on your 2018 WL system today?

TLRD IAC GGB TECK ACIA CMD ELP AVXS GGB AGR SR HUBB NGVT AABA CRSP DXC GMS HCC TPIC GATX TTD UAA OXSQ FRN RETA SITE AABA AAXN ACER ACIU ACMR ADNT ADVM AFI

I can probably generate a list of several hundred of them if you need it. But I think these are all somewhat new listings. Any ideas why the new listings are most affected?

If I "Update Industry Data" now without updating the WealthLab.DataProviders.dll assembly (pre2018 version), will that create a GICS-code inconsistency problem?

A little bird told me that such assumption would be incorrect. We hope to get the ball rolling.

Eugene,

Has the little bird told you that GICS codes are corrected in the current version?

Any idea when GICS might be working again?

Have to check up with Robert but I think not in 6.9.21 - more like 6.9.22.

Right, 6.9.21 is probably coming this week, but GICS seems to be flying under the radar still. I'm unsure that a WL Pro client change is required - the changes and updates need to be reflected in the gics.xml file that WLP downloads. Will check into it this week.

Update - GICS is on the radar, but the solution isn't clear. We'll keep working it.

No idea. I'll raise the issue in our next meeting with Fidelity.

It's far from a permanent solution, but the next update (6.9.23.x) will have the latest GICS classifications, including Real Estate as an industry.

That's great news. When 6.9.23.x is release, let us know if we need to use Data Manager to update the local Gics.xml file with the new classifications. And I hope the new listings as of 3.5 years ago and later get included as well. Thanks.
