I was using WealthLab through my Fidelity account, before the special arrangement with Fidelity was discontinued. Fidelity was my data provider.

Are there free data providers that I can use with WealthLab, such as Yahoo?

Yes, you can simply use Yahoo or any other providers on this list whose data subscription price is marked as "free":

What advantage does a subscription data service offer of free services such as Yahoo? As someone new to this, I'd like to understand what benefits I'd get from the subscription costs.

Yahoo is always free, we don't support any subscription-based service. And vice versa, some services like IQFeed and Norgate are paid only. For other vendors please refer to their websites. Typically, subscriptions extend the free offer with more allowed data requests per minute (day, month), bigger monthly quota, wider selection of instruments, longer history and so forth.
