Hi Cone,

I run Wealth Lab on 2 PC's. On one of the PC's I have encountered the message "Object reference not set to an instance of an object" in two different places. One is when I click the Strategy Monitor, "unhandled exception has occurred in your application" shows up. The other is when click on a specific security, "Unable to get Data on Demand for Symbol:xxxx" shows up. This only happen to a couple of symbols, I can get most of the ones I want.

On both PC's, I have problem of the program respond with "No Data" on a couple of symbols. The condition is different from the above description. In this case, no message appears just state No Data.

I tried to reload Wealth Lab as well as the data set several times, but the problem still persists.

Please advise as how I can correct the problems.

Thanks,

Hi Chia,

It's advised that you always search the forum before posting. There are numerous "object reference..." threads. Here's a couple topics that look relevant:

Index out of Range, Unable to get Data on Demand
Error "Object reference not set... Unable to get Data on Demand for symbol..."

Even though the message is encountered in two different places, the place to look it up is just one: the Wealth-Lab Wiki. Namely its Errors section: Errors when working with Wealth-Lab

1. For Strategy Monitor: Strategy Monitor doesn't work
2. Re: data on demand, it may be this but there ain't enough details: Errors | Data.

QUOTE:

Making sure that on demand data update is enabled in the Data Manager, switch to "All Data". If nothing comes up, the symbol is invalid (or is no longer valid).

A DataSet is only a shortcut to a collection of data files. "Reloading" it (whatever this may mean) won't help unless you actually delete the data before reloading.

Hi Eugene,

I found that the message of "Object reference not set ..." appears after the split of the security. In the previous occasions, it happens with TQQQ, and SXOL on one of my PC, I can obtain data until the day of split. Since yesterday, TQQQ also has the same problem on my other PC. I realized TQQQ had a split yesterday. Please advise how to correct. By the way, my data comes from Fidelity.

Thanks!

Hi Chia,

Considering your observation let me recommend that you review this topic (previously referred): Error "Object reference not set... Unable to get Data on Demand for symbol...".

Eugene,
I'm thinking there is some issue with the TQQQ dataset. Could you try downloading TQQQ and then make a chart. Is it all OK. I deleted my dataset with TQQQ and then made a new dataset with TQQQ and see the same issue.

I don't work with WLP but may be other Fidelity customers can chime in and prove your observation re: TQQQ not up to date?

Some more information: the data streaming is OK for TQQQ after the split for daily and 10 minute bars. It's the 30 minute bars with the issue. The same problem is with UPRO also. This was verified on 3 separate PCs.

@pestocat2:

Gary, please avoid splitting your problem reports across multiple forum topics or support tickets and respond to support technician's questions:

Error "Object reference not set... Unable to get Data on Demand for symbol..."

This is a useless thing to do. Deleting and recreating a DataSet does not affect the data anyhow (unless you "Update All Data" with "Delete data for symbols not contained in DataSets" before making the new DataSet).

@claifu66

Chia, by chance you also have the same problem with UPRO?

I just took a look at TQQQ on WLP. The daily bars look fine, and the 30-minute bars look fine. See my screenshot. Let me add, the 30-minute bars were captured with an on-demand (not static) update.

Perhaps I'm misinterpreting this, but you're saying Friday's 30-minute data (5/25/2018) is missing in the TQQQ chart? And this only happens for TQQQ? Could someone please explain how the latter is even possible? I would think if on-demand updates fail for one symbol, they would fail for all of them.

I looked at UPRO too, and both daily and 30-minute bars look okay using on-demand updates with WLP. Obviously, I'm interpreting this problem wrong. Post a screenshot of your missing bars so we can see what's going on.

@superticker

Mark, the problem claifu66 raised is known and described here: Open Issues > "Fidelity data can not be updated except for X minute." It doesn't look like you're affected yet.

Hi Eugene,

I have no problem with UPRO!

It's kind of frustrating. As I said earlier, I use two PCs.

On PC-A, no 30-min or 10-min or 5-min data for TQQQ, SOXC;
On PC-B, no 30-min data for TQQQ, LABD; all 10-min data work; no 5-min data for LABD, and TQQQ works with partial data.

All these failed symbols had some split action recently.

That's right, it's a live bug with documented workarounds:

* Open Issues > "Fidelity data can not be updated except for X minute."

OK Guys,
I have the solution! I called Fidelity this AM and they said to uninstall and reinstall. I did that, but the same issue error message for TQQQ and UPRO. I called Fidelity again and asked how to delete the data. Here is the path:
C:\Users/[your login]/Fidelity Investments/WealthLabPro/Data/FidelityStaticProvider/30 minutes [in this folder are several folders for various bar time you use, just click on the one you have an issue with]/[ next there several folders with just a alpha letter, do a mouse over and in a few moments, the stock symbols contained in the folder will be displayed, find the folder with the problem symbol and delete the folder. Now check your chart, all should be OK.

Gary, you've been told this here from the start. Several times in two forum threads and a support ticket. Here's what Open Issues says in #3:

* Delete all directories in the FidelityStaticProvider folder in hidden directory C:/Users/AppData/Roaming/Fidelity Investments/WealthLabPro and reload static data.

We documented it last year and this is in line with what Fidelity told you. The Wiki workaround is more "invasive" for simplicity's sake and because the issue can affect multiple bar scales. So should you have tried all the 4 workarounds suggested you'd have avoided this frustrating experience days ago.

Eugene,
I followed those instructions tried the suggested app, but it did not work and did not go further. On one of my PCs, all the folders were in clear sight. My laptop had the hidden folders and had to use "AppData" to get started. I think my instructions give more information and gives the user information what happens after stock split. Suggest you delete the part about copying the app, it makes things confusing.

If that presents difficulty, I've just added a link to a tutorial on seeing hidden files and folders to Open Issues.

Solution suggested by superticker's post #12 there: https://www.wealth-lab.com/Forum/Posts/38537 is simple and effective.
