if i have placed a wl on automatic update do i then have to have the software open (all the time) fore it to update ?

All the time, no, but at the time of the update, yes.
Currently, v5 may update if launched after missing an update, but that was determined to be annoying and will change in the next release.

As a workaround WL5 could be put to start in just minutes before this time in Scheduled Tasks. However, with monthly authentication in mind, with regard to buttons and user data input I would better rely on something more versatile like AutoIt.
